1. Building With Make on Unix
-----------------------------

NOTE:  While this Makefile is not intended to be GNU-make specific
       or linux-specific, it has only been tested with GNU make on linux.
       Corrections are appreciated.

The javax servlet API classes must be in your CLASSPATH.  You also need junit
to compile and run the unit tests.  If you don't have the servlet API classes
installed, you can run 'make getlibs'.  A jar file will be downloaded from
http://freenetproject.org/snapshots/freenet-ext.jar and saved in
lib/freenet-ext.jar.  Make builds will detect its presence and add it to the
CLASSPATH for you.  Note that this only contains the javax servlet API.
If you want to build the unit tests you still need to install junit.
A GPL'd reimplementation of junit can be found in the Freenet Project
CVS module named "Contrib".

Now type 'make jar' to build the node, client, fproxy/node-status servlet, 
and some additional tools.  Use 'make tests' to build the unit tests or 
'make check' to build and run them. Use 'make getseeds' to obtain a seed 
nodes file from http://hawk.freenetproject.org/~freenet4/seednodes.ref.

To run the node, set your CLASSPATH to contain lib/freenet.jar, (and 
lib/freenet-ext.jar if you don't have the servlet API classes), and call 
freenet.node.Main.

Example:

    java -cp lib/freenet-ext.jar:lib/freenet.jar freenet.node.Main

At first the node will complain about not finding the configuration file.
Running the node with the --config switch will create the configuration file.

NOTE:  You must obtain seed nodereferences from somewhere and place them
       in the seed-nodes file (<seedFile> config setting:
       defaults to seednodes.ref), for your node to be able
       to join the network.  It is best to obtain these node
       references from sources you know and trust.


Here is a summary of the make targets:

    make            - equivalent to: make client fproxy tools node
    
    make clean      - removes build/freenet and lib/freenet.jar

    make realclean  - removes all generated files
                      (including the installed node)
    
    make check      - runs make test then scripts/test.sh
    
    make getlibs    - downloads
                      http://freenetproject.org/snapshots/freenet-ext.jar
                      to lib/freenet-ext.jar
    
    make getseeds   - downloads
                      http://hawk.freenetproject.org/~freenet4/seednodes.ref
                      to ./seednodes.ref
                      
    make jar        - runs make then creates lib/freenet.jar 
    
    make tgz        - creates files in tgz/ for making a snapshot tarball
    
    make client     - compiles the client libs and CLI client
    
    make fproxy     - compiles fproxy and the node-status servlet
    
    make tools      - compiles various servlet and CLI tools
    
    make node       - compiles the node
    
    make tests      - compiles all unit test classes
    


2. Building With Ant

Win32 users can open a command prompt and use the build.bat script.
Win32 users can also use Ant.
